I wrote an article last month about this. It's not acceptable, writers are getting so little for their input and it doesn't make sense.

In your case, I believe it's mostly bots, that's why there's very little profit and reading time. Medium is filled with bots, and I've heard they're trying to get rid of as much as they can.
